“Social media, especially memes, have given us the opportunity to make fun of absolutely everything. But that does come at a cost. I think the decline in empathy the we see in young people is connected, at least in part, to the fact that no matter how  serious an issue, we can turn it into a joke. Now, I’m all for a good meme. But we have to help our kids understand that empathy, compassion and understanding are abilities we grow through practice.”

Wow. Such a good point. Totally agree and I see it happening. I LOVE memes and culturally relevant jokes, but there’s a huge dark side to it as well. People become famous for something they never intended for and the general public forgets that it’s an actual person in those pictures and videos.
